Pomegranate is a species of fruit-bearing, deciduous shrub or small tree that grows up to 5-8 m tall. The leaves are opposite or sub-opposite, glossy, narrow, oblong, entire, 3-7 cm long and 2 cm broad. The flowers are bright red, with five petals each and the fruit is between an orange and a grapefruit in size. In the Northern Hemisphere, the fruit is typically harvested in season from September to February, and in the Southern Hemisphere from March to May.

History of the Plant:

Pomegranate is widely cultivated throughout the Middle East and Caucasus region, north Africa and tropical Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia, the drier parts of southeast Asia, and parts of the Mediterranean Basin. It is also cultivated in parts of California and Arizona and has also become more common in the commercial markets of Europe and the Western Hemisphere.
